Gordon Cements Second Consecutive Pole

SONOMA, Calif. (June 25, 2004) – Jeff Gordon picked up his second consecutive pole position Friday, posting the quickest lap in NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series time trials at Infineon Raceway. Driving the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet, the four-time champion toured the two-mile road course at 94.303 mph (75.968 seconds) for his third pole award of 2004. He also started first at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway on April 18 and last week at Michigan International Speedway. “We’re on a mission,” Gordon said. “We’re not happy with the way things have been turning out for us lately. All we can do is just attack, attack, attack. This is a great opportunity and place for us to do that.” The performance, a new track record, marked Gordon’s fourth career pole at Infineon Raceway. Terry Labonte will start 15th in the No. 5 Kellogg’s Chevy, followed by teammate Jimmie Johnson, who qualified 34th in the No. 48 Lowe’s Monte Carlo. Rookie Brian Vickers will line up 39th on Sunday in the No. 25 GMAC Financial Services Chevrolet.
