CONCORD, N.C. – Leave it to seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson to find a way to win even in the offseason.
The driver of the No. 48 Ally Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE capped 2019 with a victory in the 10th annual Ajax Cup on Aspen Mountain.
Making the moment all the more special was the fact that the driver’s daughter, 9-year-old Evie, was part of the winning team.
“She did great. Every year it gets a little better, but something happened three or four days ago where she really found her edges and she’s been flying ever since,” Johnson told The Aspen Times about his daughter.
Last year, the father-daughter pair competed together and came home in second place.
To close out 2019, this time around they advanced through the 16-team field into the finals, ultimately taking home the crown on a team that also included Olympian Alex Ferreira. Each team was randomly assigned a professional skier.
“To partner with Jimmie was absolutely fantastic,” Ferreira told The Aspen Times. “He is a wonderful human being and he is very much a part of this community by doing this event.”
All-in-all it made for a great close to the year as all eyes are now on 2020 and Johnson’s final NASCAR Cup Series season.
“It feels great winning and to have this experience with my daughter,” the driver told The Aspen Times.
