LEBANON, Tenn. (April 8, 2004) – Kyle Busch can’t play the guitar, but he sure would like to add another one to his collection.
Starting from the pole position, Busch won last year’s ARCA Series race at Nashville Superspeedway, and received one of the sport’s most coveted trophies -- a specially designed Gibson Les Paul.
Thing is, he can’t play a lick. So, for now, the piece is still resting in its case.
“The Nashville trophy is pretty sweet,” said Busch, driver of the No. 5 Lowe’s Chevrolet. “It’s just awesome to have a trophy that you can actually play, if you’ve ever taken lessons. I can’t play at all. I had never held a guitar until I won last year’s ARCA race.
“The photographers told me to hold it like I was playing it, then said I was holding it wrong. I was like, ‘How am I holding it wrong? I’ve seen musicians do this plenty of times on TV.’
“It’s definitely the coolest trophy I’ve ever won. I still haven’t figured out how to display it, though. It’s just sitting in its case right now. I’d love to have another one to go with it. Maybe I could use them as bookends.”
This week, the No. 5 Lowe’s team will race Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 273, which was driven to consecutive top-10 finishes at Nashville by Brian Vickers last season. It also went to Victory Lane at Indianapolis Raceway Park in August.
“I had never even sat in that car until earlier this week, when I adjusted my seat,” Busch said. “I’m not concerned at all that I haven’t driven this chassis before. With the consistency that Hendrick has in all of its cars, a car is a car is a car.
“They’re all built the same, so you just jump in them and go.”
With two consecutive top-five finishes under his belt, Busch is looking forward to a return to “Music City,” where he hopes to take advantage of the momentum.
“I really enjoy going to Nashville,” he said. “It’s definitely the smoothest concrete track that we race on. It’s definitely a lot of fun.
“If you happen to get out of the groove getting into Turn 3, though, it’s a little bit slick. I did hear from the (Busch team) that the Goodyear tires were really awesome here last year, and you were able to race side by side.
“We’re excited to go back with the Lowe’s/Pella Chevrolet and hopefully get another top-five run and continue on with the streak we’ve got going right now.”
