CONCORD, N.C. -- Jimmie Johnson placed seventh and Chase Elliott followed in eighth for the 10th race of the season at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Johnson and Elliott both rode inside the top 10 for all of the third stage after starting the race in 15th and first, respectively.

It was Elliott's sixth top-10 finish this season (including his win at Charlotte Motor Speedway) and was Johnson's fifth top-10 finish in 2020.

Alex Bowman crossed the finish line in 12th place and William Byron finished in 33rd after he got a flat tire early in the event.

Kevin Harvick won the race.

Below is a closer look at how Sunday's race at Atlanta unfolded for the four Hendrick Motorsports teammates.

CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 1LE

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Elliott started in the pole position and led the field until the competition caution came out. He was fourth coming off pit road.
  • He fell to eighth by lap 34 and moved up to seventh five laps later. By lap 53, Elliott was riding in sixth place. He pitted with 38 laps left in Stage 1 and came back on the track in 12th.
  • After other drivers pitted, Elliott was bumped up to fifth. He dropped to sixth and remained there as the first stage ended.
  • Thirteen laps into Stage 2, Elliott was up to fourth. Three laps later, he was in third place – his best position since starting first at the beginning of the race.
  • He dropped to fourth on lap 141 but was able to reclaim third for a little bit. On lap 150, Elliott got a little loose and dropped to fifth place. Coming off pit road halfway through Stage 2, Elliott fell to 10th.
  • He used the restart after the fourth caution to run up the field and settled into fourth. Elliott finished the second stage in fifth.
  • He kept the fifth-place position until lap 252, when he fell to sixth. With 50 laps to go, Elliott was in eighth place. He moved to seventh behind Jimmie Johnson with 18 laps to go.
  • Elliott dropped a spot back to eighth, which is how he placed.

WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 LIBERTY UNIVERSITY CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 1LE

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Byron was in 20th when the race began and dropped to 22nd in the first lap. He quickly moved up five spots to 17th by the fourth lap.
  • After the competition caution, Byron was in 15th. He got loose at tapped the outside wall on lap 32 and needed to head to pit road due to a flat tire. He restarted several laps down in 39th place. Byron remained in 39th when the first stage ended.
  • By lap 137 he moved up a spot to 38th but was still down seven laps. He maintained that position throughout all of Stage 2.
  • By lap 267 Byron edged up another spot to 37th. He was in 36th by lap 275 and moved up to 35th by lap 292.
  • With five to go, Bryon was riding in 33rd and remained in that position until the end of the race.

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 ALLY CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 1LE

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Johnson started in 15th and moved to 13th within the first lap. By lap 12 he was up another spot to 12th and was 11th when the competition caution was called.
  • Johnson broke into the top 10 after the field went green again. He pitted on lap 68 and was 14th coming out. Johnson settled in 10th by lap 70 and was in ninth by the 88th lap.
  • He jumped up two spots to eighth after the second caution of the race allowed the field to head to pit road. He was in ninth at the end of Stage 1.
  • Early in Stage 2, Johnson moved up to seventh place. By lap 150 he was up a spot to sixth. He pitted with a large chunk of the field halfway through the stage and came out in ninth.
  • Johnson had some tire issues with less than 30 laps left in the second stage and dropped to 10th. He ended the second stage in that position.
  • With 52 laps left in the race, Johnson was riding in sixth place. Only three laps away from the end of the race, Johnson dropped to seventh, which is how he finished.

ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 88 AXALTA CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 1LE

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Bowman rolled off the grid in eighth and dropped to ninth within the first couple of laps. He was in 10th when the competition caution came out.
  • He was 14th after he came off pit road and settled in 15th by lap 34. Five laps later he was in 14th. By lap 50 Bowman had dropped two spots to 16th.
  • He decided to pit with the majority of the field and came off pit road in 18th by lap 69. He moved up to 13th by lap 74. He was still in 13th at the end of Stage 1.
  • Bowman was in 11th by lap 14 in the second stage. He was in the top 10 after going back in forth for several laps. Bowman inched up to eighth a third of the way through Stage 2.
  • After a pit stop halfway through the stage, Bowman led Chase Elliott and Jimmie Johnson in seventh place.
  • He was up to sixth with 36 laps left in the stage. After the fourth caution of the race, he maintained that positioning coming off pit road. Bowman fell behind to ninth and was trailing Elliott by a spot on lap 205. He finished Stage 2 in 11th. 
  • Bowman was in 13th with 75 laps left in the race. He shuffled up to second after many cars on the lead lap pitted. Bowman decided shortly after to pit with 55 to go. He was in 20th coming out of the pits and was in 17th by lap 287. 
  • With 20 laps to go, Bowman was in 16th and jumped up to 14th five laps later. He ended the race in 12th place.
