DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 10, 2004) – Jeff Gordon found the speed he was looking for during the second of two NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series practices at Daytona International Speedway on Tuesday, posting the quickest lap overall.
Driving the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet, Gordon logged 25 laps in the 45-minute session, with a best of 191.510 mph (46.995 seconds) around the 2.5-mile track.
Jimmie Johnson was also fast on Tuesday, with the fourth-best performance in the second session. The El Cajon, Calif., native drove his No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet to a 191.388-mph lap (47.025 seconds).
Two-time Cup Series champion Terry Labonte was 20th overall in the No. 5 Kellogg’s / got milk? Monte Carlo, followed by rookie Brian Vickers, who was 28th in the No. 5 GMAC Financial Services Chevrolet.
Team Lowe’s Racing (190.299 mph, 47.294 seconds) was quickest of the Hendrick Motorsports contingent in Tuesday’s early session, as Johnson was 13th-best among 45 drivers. Gordon was 37th, with Labonte 41st and Vickers 43rd.
John Andretti led the first session at 191.742 mph (46.938 seconds).
Wednesday’s schedule calls for one 45-minute Cup Series practice beginning at 1:40 p.m. ET. It will be the final session before Thursday’s running of the Gatorade Twin 125s.
