CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 10, 2003) – GMAC Racing took the first step in putting last weekend’s 32nd-place finish at Kansas Speedway behind them by qualifying second for the Little Trees 300 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on Thursday.
Brian Vickers, driver of the No. 5 GMAC Financial Services Chevrolet, posted a lap of 183.755 mph during NASCAR Busch Series time trials.
The second-place start marks the best qualifying effort of the season for the team, currently third in the championship standings, just 46 points behind leader David Green.
The 19-year-old Vickers will start on the outside of NASCAR Winston Cup Series regular Kevin Harvick, who will start first after running a lap of 184.313 mph during qualifying.
“We’re happy with the lap we ran,” Vickers said. “I don’t know if we could have squeezed too much more out of the car during qualifying. Second is good, but I’m still hoping we can get a pole (position) before the season is over.”
