CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Sept. 24, 2003) – An exciting new initiative called “Race To Success” is speeding into the eastside community of Charlotte.
During the next 12 months, students and community residents will be offered a variety of experiences that will provide education, career awareness and general exposure to the local motor sports industry.
Piedmont Open Middle School and the Eastside Community Development Corporation are leading the pack in a collaboration that will engage approximately 45 AVID Program students in direct learning to include writing & communications curriculum; math & science curriculum; shop tours; track tours; professional speakers; and other educational experiences.
The first phase of the program will begin in October with in-class assignments and a field trip to Hendrick Motorsports. Project plans include an introductory training session, a college tour, a community awareness event and other opportunities to learn more about the growing stock car racing industry.
Hendrick Motorsports and Lowe’s Motor Speedway are among the local companies providing in-kind support for this endeavor.
The Eastside Community Development Corporation is dedicated to serving families, neighborhoods, and businesses on the eastside of Charlotte. Organized in November 1998, their mission is to improve Eastside living conditions by providing and promoting activities that support economic development, education, community arts, and diversity in motor sports.
