BRISTOL, Tenn. (Aug. 21, 2003) – For the eighth consecutive week, Brian Vickers, driver of the No. 5 GMAC Financial Services Chevrolet, placed in the top 10 during NASCAR Busch Series time trials, qualifying third at Bristol Motor Speedway on Thursday.
Vickers’ effort ties GMAC Racing’s best starting position of the season, which came just three weeks ago at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Coincidentally, the team earned their first win of the season at IRP after starting third.
“The car ran through Turns 1 and 2 awesome,” Vickers said. “We missed the pole because of how the car drove through Turns 3 and 4. It was just a little too tight.
“I’m a little surprised with third because we spent almost the entire first practice session working on race setup and we only made one qualifying run during practice.”
Over the last eight races, Vickers has been the only Busch Series driver to qualify in the top 10 for each event.
Jason Keller, driver of the No. 57 entry, captured the pole, posting a speed of 126.021 mph.
Friday’s night race is scheduled for an 8 p.m. ET start and will be broadcast live on TNT and PRN Radio.
