Johnson Earns Outside Pole at Pocono

POCONO, Pa. (July 25, 2003) – With a lap of 169.821 mph, Jimmie Johnson earned the outside pole position at Pocono Raceway on Friday in the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet, leading Hendrick Motorsports in NASCAR Winston Cup Series qualifying. Two-time series champion Terry Labonte will start sixth in the No. 5 Kellogg’s / got milk? Monte Carlo, putting a second Hendrick Motorsports entry in the top 10. Driving the No. 24 DuPont Chevy, Jeff Gordon will start Sunday’s Pennsylvania 500 in 25th, followed by 26th-place Joe Nemechek in the No. 25 UAW-Delphi Monte Carlo. Ryan Newman posted the quickest lap in Friday’s time trials at 170.358 mph.
