Dale Jr. came to Hendrick Motorsports before the 2008 season as one of the most sought-after free agents in the sport's history. He had parted ways with Dale Earnhardt Inc. after eight full-time NASCAR Cup Series seasons with 17 wins and two NASCAR Xfinity Series championships. Dale Jr.'s new deal wasn't his first with team owner Rick Hendrick. As the story goes, the two signed a "contract" on a napkin in 1991 when Dale Jr. was 15 years old and had jokingly talked about that "contract" several times.

Over 10 seasons at Hendrick Motorsports, Dale Jr. won nine races in the No. 88 Chevrolet. The first of those victories came at Michigan International Speedway in 2008. After two winless seasons, getting paired with crew chief Steve Letarte would change the driver's fortunes. He got back to victory lane in 2012 at Michigan.

After posting his best points standings finish (fifth) in his time at Hendrick Motorsports in 2013, Dale Jr. won seven races over the next two seasons. The first of those wins came in the 2014 DAYTONA 500, which saw him lead a race-high 54 laps, including the final 18. The victory also sparked a social media revolution as he joined X (formally known as Twitter) shortly after and it has been a constant outlet for him to share racing history, thoughts on the sport and life updates. His four-win campaign included a sweep of Pocono Raceway and a long-hungered victory at Martinsville Speedway.

In 2015, paired with Greg Ives, Dale Jr. won three times, including two superspeedway races and the last Cup Series win of his career at Phoenix Raceway that fall. He suffered a concussion and missed the second half of the 2016 season. Returning for the 2017 season, he announced in April that he would retire at the end of the year.

Away from the Cup Series, Dale Jr. is a co-owner of JR Motorsports, an Xfinity Series team of which Hendrick is a co-owner. JRM is an affiliate of Hendrick Motorsports and has seen current Cup Series drivers Chase Elliott (2014) and William Byron (2017) come through the pipeline there and win Xfinity championships.

After retiring from full-time racing, Dale Jr. dove into broadcasting, spending six seasons in the NASCAR on NBC booth, which reunited him with Letarte. In 2025, he will be part of the broadcast booth for TNT Sports and Amazon Prime's coverage of NASCAR. He hosts a twice-weekly podcast called "The Dale Jr. Download," which covers current events in racing and features a weekly guest, typically from the racing industry. He has also become a co-owner of the CARS Tour and dabbles with some late-model and Xfinity Series racing each year.

The son of Dale Earnhardt has an intensely passionate fan base, as evidenced by his 15 National Motorsports Press Association Most Popular Driver Award wins. In 2022, he was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The following year, he was named to NASCAR's 75 Greatest Drivers list for the sport's 75th anniversary season.
