In a NASCAR Cup Series career that spanned 15 years, the Enumclaw, Washington, native debuted in the sport's top series in 2004 and won 12 races from 2005 to 2011. He joined Rick Hendrick's team in 2012 to drive the No. 5 Chevrolet, which he did for six seasons. He earned six victories, 35 top-five results, 73 top-10s, and five pole positions in that span.
The driver of the No. 5 entry's statistical best season came in 2012, the first of his six years with the team. During the campaign, he tallied two wins, four pole positions, 12 top-five finishes and 19 top-10s, finishing a career-best fourth in the points standings. He followed that season up with another two-win campaign in 2013.
One part of Kahne's Hendrick Motorsports tenure was his ability to win in the clutch and at crown jewel races. This was first illustrated in the 2012 Coca-Cola 600. Kahne utilized a long-run car that showed its true colors as the laps clicked off. After restarting sixth with 75 laps remaining, he took off with an unmatched pace, taking the lead with 68 circuits remaining. On what would be his 300th career start, Kahne scored his first victory for Hendrick Motorsports in the sport's longest race.

Kahne showcased his ability to win in the clutch at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 2014. The 1.54-mile oval was the second-to-last race before the playoffs began that season. Needing a victory to make the postseason, Kahne found himself in the third position, coming to the second NASCAR Overtime restart. As the green flag came out, Kahne executed a daring three-wide pass to draw even with race leader Matt Kenseth before passing him off of turn four coming to the white flag. The aggressive move paid off as Kahne would take the checkered flag, locking himself into the playoffs for 2014.
However, Kahne's final win in Hendrick Motorsports colors was arguably his biggest. In the 2017 Brickyard 400, Kahne's team utilized an alternate pit strategy and ultimately took the lead late when a caution flipped the pit cycle. Kahne held off the competition at first with the ensuing track position but lost the point position to Brad Keselowski on the second-to-last restart. As the race headed to NASCAR Overtime, Kahne found his way back to the front. He made a big move into turn one for the lead, taking the point position and eventually the win. The victory again locked Kahne into the Cup Series playoffs for the final time.
