BROOKLYN, Mich. - Good things come to those who wait.
At least Chase Elliott hopes so.
Rain interfered with the NASCAR Cup Series at Michigan International Speedway for the second straight day on Sunday, postponing the race into Monday after 51 laps with Chase Elliott leading.
Qualifying for the event was also scrapped due to weather on Saturday, leaving the starting grid to be determined by NASCAR's metric.
Sunday's stoppage came just after the conclusion of Stage 1. Three Hendrick Motorsports drivers earned stage points, led by Elliott who crossed the line in second place in the No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. William Byron was a spot behind in his No. 24 RAPTOR Chevy with Alex Bowman and the No. 48 Ally Racing Team ending Stage 1 in ninth.
A single-car spin by Denny Hamlin late in the stage sent teams in a couple of directions in terms of strategy. Most of the field pitted with six cars, including Byron, staying out to chase stage points. When those cars subsequently pitted after the yellow waved, Elliott was able to assume the lead just before the rain came.
The start of the race was also postponed by weather. Originally set for a 2:36 p.m. green flag, the green flag didn't wave until just before 5 p.m.
Kyle Larson took the lead early in his No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevy and led 34 laps in the opening stage but fell back on the restart, coming home 14th in Stage 1. He was up to seventh at the time of the postponement, third among Hendrick Motorsports drivers with Bowman showing fourth and Byron is 27th after pitting at the stage break.
The race will resume at 11 a.m. and will air on USA Network.
