AVONDALE, Ariz. - In terms of early season tests in the NASCAR Cup Series, there may be none more important than the spring visit to Phoenix Raceway.
The host of the NASCAR Championship Race in November, Sunday's race will offer an initial yardstick event for teams in the premier series of the sport.
So far, it looks promising for Hendrick Motorsports as William Byron, who's aiming at his third-straight, Championship Race appearance, took the pole during Saturday qualifying. Byron - as well as teammates Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott - each have a win at Phoenix to their credit already.
Alex Bowman nearly scored a win in Saturday's Xfinity race, finishing second, and will look for his first win at his home track.
