CONCORD, N.C. -- There's plenty of reason for excitement as the Hendrick Motorsports drivers head back to Daytona International Speedway.
The organization has five wins in the summer event at the track, and sights are set on a sixth thanks to the setup that the cars will bring to the 4th of July weekend.
"We'll be taking, actually, the package back down there that we had in for the qualifiers and the 150s," said Jeff Andrews, director of engine operations for Hendrick Motorsports.
With that package, the organization secured a sweep of the front row during qualifying -- with Jeff Gordon on the pole and Jimmie Johnson beside him in second -- and a sweep of the two Duel at Daytona races by Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Ultimately that led to a one-two-three start for the organization in the Daytona 500 before a different package was introduced for the actual race.
This time around, it'll be that qualifying package that sees the track for the 400-mile event.
"So we're pretty excited about it," Andrews said.
The director of engine operations also discussed the factor that temperatures will play at Daytona in July, even during a night race.
That's why the organization worked hard with its teammates at Valvoline to help reduce friction in the engine.
