CONCORD, N.C. -- Jeff Gordon has won on short tracks. He's won on road courses. He's won at intermediate tracks and superspeedways.
He's won 92 times, a total that includes multiple wins at 19 different Cup tracks and at least one win at 24 Cup tracks. In the process, he's won four Cup championships.
But one victory eludes him -- Kentucky Speedway.
“I’m already proud that I have won at every track except Kentucky, but to win there this weekend and have a win at every track at the Sprint Cup level is something that would mean a lot to me," Gordon said.
If he were to find Victory Lane Saturday night, he would become the first driver in NASCAR history to win at every track.
Just four Cup races have been run at Kentucky, and Gordon has taken home a top-10 finish in all four. Only four drivers can claim that accomplishment, and Gordon is joined by teammate Jimmie Johnson in that select company.
In those four races, Hendrick Motorsports has posted two poles, five top-five finishes, 12 top-10s and 213 laps led. Kentucky, which began hosting NASCAR’s premier series in 2011, is the only active track where Hendrick Motorsports has not produced a win in the Sprint Cup Series.
So a win by any of the four Hendrick Motorsports drivers would mark a milestone, but if Gordon were to earn his first victory of his final full-time Cup season, it would be all the more momentous.
"Winning at every track is not something that’s easy to accomplish," Gordon said. "This will be a challenge, and I like a good challenge and the team does, too.”
