CONCORD, N.C. – This weekend, all five Hendrick Motorsports haulers are Brickyard-bound.
Since NASCAR started racing at the 2.5-mile track in 1994, Hendrick Motorsports has picked up nine wins and is looking for another chance to kiss the bricks this Sunday.
Many memories have been made there over the years. Before the engines are fired to make a few more, let’s take a look at three moments that stand out.
Aug. 6, 2006 – Jimmie Johnson was back for his fifth time at historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway in search of his first win. He rolled off the grid fifth, led 33 laps and eventually took home the checkered flag. In the years following, Johnson has gone on to capture three more wins at The Brickyard.
July 26, 2009 – After posting a qualifying speed of over 182 miles per hour, Mark Martin won the pole award and started the race in Indiana on the front row. He led 14 laps of the race and ultimately crossed the finish line second, behind teammate Jimmie Johnson. Martin went on to finish the 2009 season with five wins and second in the points standings.
July 27, 2014 – It was the 20-year anniversary of Jeff Gordon’s win at the inaugural Brickyard 400 race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. When the green flag dropped, he started on the front row in the second position. After leading 40 laps, Gordon earned his fifth victory at the track. This win broke a tie with teammate Johnson for most Sprint Cup Series wins at The Brickyard. Gordon will return this weekend for his last race at the 2.5-mile track as the defending winner.
