CONCORD, N.C. – Jimmie Johnson made history on Sunday at Dover International Speedway when he won his 83rd NASCAR Cup Series race, tying Cale Yarborough for sixth on the all-time Cup wins list.
Johnson honored his longtime hero with a specially designed helmet featuring photos of the NASCAR Hall of Famer.
Another tribute came when Johnson reached Victory Lane and sported a vintage No. 28 Yarborough hat.
Monday, Johnson had the chance to talk to Yarborough on the phone about the milestone win.
“To track down his number and to give him a call and talk for a few minutes was so cool,” Johnson shared. “And to hear his excitement and just how happy he was for the tribute and the fact that I honored his was really cool. It was an awesome few minutes that we spent on the phone.”
After a memorable weekend tying Yarborough’s record, Johnson will hit the track Sunday at Pocono for his first chance to compete for his 84th win.
