DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- For Chase Elliott, watching the Winter Olympics this year brought back a blast from the past.
Back in the 2016 offseason, Elliott joined a pair of snowboarders -- Red Gerard and Danny Davis -- on the slopes of Breckenridge, Colorado.
Last weekend, it was Gerard who captured the first gold medal of the Olympics for Team U.S.A., putting together a championship-caliber run in the men's snowboard slopestyle event.
“That was really cool," Elliott smiled. "He’s a really young guy. He’s a partner through Mountain Dew and I got to meet him and Danny Davis a couple winters ago, so, pretty neat."
It made what was already a fun experience even more special.
"Happy for him – congratulations on his gold, that’s pretty cool," Elliott said. "It's fun to watch the Olympics and kind of get to know those guys a little better.”
