Labonte Looks to Open Month with Another Top-10

FONTANA, Calif. (Sept. 3, 2004) – Terry Labonte and Kellogg’s Racing will kick off another month of competition with this weekend’s NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series event at California Speedway. Based on recent history, you can’t blame the two-time champion for wearing a smile of optimism as he heads west. Since May of this year, the first race of each month has yielded a top-10 finish for Labonte and the No. 5 Kellogg’s Chevrolet, including his seventh-place showing in the first visit to California Speedway on May 2. Five weeks later, Labonte followed that with a seventh-place effort at Dover (Del.) International Speedway to launch the month of June. July began with a bang under the lights at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway as Labonte teamed with Spider-Man, who was featured in a special paint scheme on the No. 5 Monte Carlo, to finish eighth in the Pepsi 400. Another one-of-a-kind car design highlighted Kellogg Company’s sponsorship of the United States Olympic Team as the tour rolled into Pocono for the Aug. 1 Pennsylvania 500. Labonte carried the Olympic Rings to a sixth-place finish and will take that same car to Fontana for this weekend’s race. The odds of Labonte continuing this string of month-opening successes are pretty good when you consider the tracks coming up. After California, where he has four top-10s in eight starts, October opens at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, where Labonte has two victories. November starts at Phoenix International Raceway, where Labonte also is a past winner.
