GMAC Racing Moving On After Texas

TALLADEGA, Ala. (April 4, 2003) – After a wild weekend in Texas, the GMAC Racing team has shifted their focus to this weekend’s Aaron’s 312 at Talladega Superspeedway, a place where aerodynamics play a lead role. The 2.66-mile tri-oval is the biggest track on the NASCAR Busch Series schedule and teams will once again don restrictor plates. GMAC Racing finished 42nd at the first restrictor-plate race this season at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway after being caught up in an accident on Lap 30. While the team ran strong in Daytona throughout “Speedweeks,” including the fastest time in the final “Happy Hour” practice, crew chief Lance McGrew says things are going to be better at Talladega. “We’ve built a brand new car for this race,” McGrew said. “We saw a lot of what other teams were doing with their superspeedway cars and we sort of just followed suit while building this car. It was taken to the wind tunnel and showed some positive numbers.” With last weekend’s event behind him, Brian Vickers, driver of the No. 5 GMAC Financial Services Chevrolet, will be making his debut at Talladega Superspeedway in his seventh Busch Series start for Hendrick Motorsports. “If nothing else, last weekend’s deal in Texas has done nothing but add fuel to our fire for a win,” Vickers said. “We showed the caliber of our team by running up front like we did and we’re going to continue doing that each week.” Qualifying for Saturday’s Aaron’s 312 will take place at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
