Bittersweet Outside Pole for Busch at Kentucky

SPARTA, Ky. (June 18, 2004) – Kyle Busch earned the outside pole position for Saturday night’s NASCAR Busch Series Meijer 300 -- but he won’t start there. Busch, who turned a lap of 179.832 mph in his No. 5 Lowe’s/Gladiator Chevrolet, spun in Turn 3 and made contact with the Kentucky Speedway retaining wall during Friday’s final practice session. The damage will force Team Lowe’s to use a backup car and start the 300-mile event from the rear of the field, per NASCAR rules. The 19-year-old rookie was taken to Kentucky's infield care center and promptly released with no injuries. Feese Solid in Qualifying Entering his first career NASCAR event, Blake Feese qualified 16th at Kentucky, driving his No. 87 ditech.com Chevrolet to a lap of 176.028 mph. A Hendrick Motorsports developmental driver, Feese, 22, has earned top-10 finishes in each of his three ARCA Series starts this season. Martin Truex Jr. will start from the pole Saturday after a lap of 180.102 mph. Saturday’s Busch Series event will be broadcast live by FX (7:30 p.m. ET) and MRN Radio (7:45 p.m. ET).
