SONOMA, Calif. (June 25, 2006) – Jeff Gordon won Sunday at Infineon Raceway, scoring his 74th NEXTEL Cup Series victory, and jumped to eighth in the championship standings.
The performance, which included a race-high 44 laps led, was Gordon’s ninth career road course triumph, extending the NASCAR record he already owns.
Gordon credited the hard work of his No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet team, led by crew chief Steve Letarte.
“They gave me such an awesome race car this weekend that I had to get them this win,” Gordon said. “If we didn’t win with this car, we can’t ever win.”
Hendrick Motorsports placed all four of its teams in the top-15, with Jimmie Johnson finishing 10th, Kyle Busch 11th and Brian Vickers 14th.
Driving a No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet, Johnson extended his lead in the NEXTEL Cup standings by posting his 13th top-10 finish in the 16th race of 2006. No other driver has notched more than 10.
