Getting to know Chris Doherty, race engineer for the No. 88 Chevrolet

CONCORD, N.C. (Feb. 2, 2010) – Chris Doherty is one of the new faces on the No. 88 team, and as a race engineer, he will work closely each weekend with lead engineer Chris Heroy on Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s AMP Energy/National Guard Chevrolet. Meet Chris Doherty: Full name: Christopher Gilles Doherty Nickname: Derrty, Dertz, Dortbox. Hometown: Columbus, Ohio. Education: College of Wooster (BA Physics in 2004) and University of Michigan (BSME Mechanical Engineering in 2006) Team/job duties: Race engineer for the No. 88 AMP Energy/National Guard Chevrolet. Time at current job: 1.5 months. On working with the No. 88 team this year: I think my skills set meshes pretty well with the rest of the team, but I’m relatively new to the racetrack and the learning curve is steep. I’m hoping to make strong contributions and help make our race cars consistently faster every week. Years in racing: 3.5 with Hendrick Motorsports. First racing job: Hendrick Motorsports seven-post engineer. First job overall: Grocery bagger age 14. If I wasn't in racing I would be: Aerospace engineer. Best racing memory: Victory Lane with Jimmie Johnson and the No. 48 team at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway in the fall of 2007. Favorite track: Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International. Hobbies outside of racing: Riding (and crashing) motorcycles. Favorite sport other than racing: Soccer and college football. When I'm not at the shop/track you can find me: Fixing bikes and on occasion even riding them. On an off weekend you can find me: Hopefully you can’t. Pets: German Sheppard and Border Collie something mix. Favorite movie: Tie between “Memento” and “Dumb and Dumber.” Favorite book: “Tire and Vehicle Dynamics.” Favorite music: Incubus, The Roots. What you’ll find on my iPOD: Music and some pictures. Favorite food: Whatever’s free. If I ran NASCAR, I’d: Make a lot of money. One thing people don’t know about me: I don’t like cheese. I knew I wanted a job in NASCAR when: I recognized the challenge in making gigantic boxes of steel go really fast.
