DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 2012 Daytona 500 has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. today, NASCAR officials announced this morning at Daytona International Speedway. The race still will air live on FOX.
The season-opening NASCAR Sprint Cup event originally was supposed to start at noon today after rain showers persisted Sunday at the 2.5-mile superspeedway.
NASCAR President Mike Helton advised the media during Monday's session that rescheduling for Tuesday is an option should the weather issues continue.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start fifth in the 54th running of the Daytona 500, and Jimmie Johnson will join him in the top 10 in eighth. Their Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne will line up 16th and 20th, respectively.
