Looking back at Jimmie Johnson's 2008 Brickyard 400 win

2008 Recap: Jimmie Johnson started from the pole position on July 27, 2008, and withstood a caution-filled Brickyard 400 to kiss the bricks for a second time at historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This win didn’t come easy, though. Tires were an issue throughout the 400-mile event, and NASCAR officials waved the caution flag a total of 11 times. Still, Johnson kept his No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet out front and was running third when a competition caution was issued with 11 laps to go. Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus agreed to come in and take two right-side tires during the yellow-flag period. A swift effort by the No. 48 pit crew allowed Johnson to win the race off pit road, and he reclaimed the race lead. On the ensuing restart, Johnson pulled away and ultimately led a race-high 71 laps en route to his second Brickyard 400 win.  

This win marked the sixth Brickyard 400 victory for team owner Rick Hendrick and was the 35th victory of Johnson’s NASCAR Sprint Cup career. Johnson also became the second driver to start the Brickyard 400 from the pole and win the 400-mile event.
