CONCORD, N.C. – This weekend, Hendrick Motorsports drivers will be racing for $1 million.
It’s the annual NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
This non-points race is made up of 20 drivers, including all four Hendrick Motorsports drivers. Over the years, the All-Star Race has been a fun event that fans look forward to each season.
But before the green flag waves on Saturday night, let’s take a look back at three Hendrick Motorsports moments from the race.
May 17, 1997 – It was a special race, and Jeff Gordon had a special car. He brought his Jurassic Park Chevrolet “T-Rex” to Charlotte Motor Speedway just for this race. And it brought him plenty of luck. After starting 19th out of 20 cars, Gordon used his T-Rex car to push forward and win his second All-Star trophy. It would prove to be the only race for the famed Chevy.
May 19, 2001 – Gordon had already won the All-Star Race two times before, and he was itching for another win. Out of 21 cars, Gordon started the race right in the middle of the pack from the 10th spot. After leading 10 out of 70 laps, he took the checkered flag once again.
May 18, 2013 – Starting the All-Star Race as the defending winner, Jimmie Johnson was looking to take home the checkered flag for the second consecutive time. When the green flag dropped, Johnson was near the back in the 18th position, but he didn’t stay there long. Within 90 laps he moved to the front, led 10 of them, and crossed the finish line first.
