CONCORD, N.C. – It is time to take on the Monster Mile.
Dover International Speedway has been good to Hendrick Motorsports, with 17 wins there for the organization over the years.
But before the haulers head to the one-mile concrete oval, let’s take a look at three Hendrick Motorsports memorable moments from the track.
May 18, 1986 - Geoff Bodine was looking to give Hendrick Motorsports its first win at Dover. And that happened during his fifth race at the Monster Mile. After qualifying third, he led 85 laps en route to Victory Lane. Bodine ultimately finished the 1986 season with two wins and eight pole awards.
Sept. 17, 1995- When the green flag dropped at Dover International Speedway, Jeff Gordon was on the front row. After leading 80 percent of the race, 400 of 500 laps, Gordon took home the checkered flag in his first win at the mile track. 1995 proved to be Gordon’s year as he also went on to win his first of four championships.
Sept. 27, 2009 – Having won the race at Dover earlier in the season, Jimmie Johnson was ready to sweep the Monster Mile. He started the weekend off in his favor by winning the pole. And after leading more than half of the race, Johnson led the pack across the finish line. Following right behind him was teammate Mark Martin, who finished the race second. Now Jimmie Johnson holds the all-time record for the most victories at the one-mile track with nine wins.
