CONCORD, N.C. -- Wednesday afternoon, NASCAR announced rules updates for the 2016 Sprint Cup Series season.
"The core goal for us continues to remain the same, and that's deliver the best and safest racing possible for the fans, and it's a goal that the entire industry shares," said Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer. "It's a great thing in terms of working together with the industry, this year especially. It's never been stronger. We're confident it's going to continue to deliver great racing for the fans.
The base rules package for 2016 -- utilized for all tracks except superspeedways -- will look somewhat similar to the low-downforce one used this season at Kentucky Speedway and Darlington Raceway.
It includes a 3.5-inch rear spoiler, a 0.25-inch front splitter leading edge and a 33-inch radiator pan. The base package is also designed to allow for Goodyear to develop track-specific tires to help complement the aerodynamics of the cars and create even better racing.
Other changes include the inclusion of digital dashboards, which was previously an optional addition.

"There will always be work to do. It's always going to evolve," O'Donnell said. "But I think we'll really have a good base package to continue to work from."
