KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The grid is set for the second race in the Contender Round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
Chase contender Jeff Gordon, piloting the No. 24 3M Chevrolet SS, drove his way into the final round of qualifying Friday evening at Kansas Speedway. The veteran driver will take the green flag in his final race at Kansas from sixth place.
Just missing Round 3 of qualifying was fellow Chase contender Dale Earnhardt Jr., who will roll off the grid 15th in the No. 88 Halo 5: Master Chief Chevrolet SS.
“I was tight in the middle of (Turns) 3 and 4 all day. But we were trying to work on it and we had some pretty good laps I thought," Earnhardt said. "I like some things that I saw today and I think the car has good speed.”
Jimmie Johnson will compete for a Kansas Speedway sweep this weekend driving the No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet SS. The May Kansas winner will start 21st.
Kasey Kahne will be the final Hendrick Motorsports teammate to take the green flag, rolling off the grid in in his No. 5 LiftMaster Chevrolet SS in 24th place.
Brad Keselowski will lead the field to green in Sunday's race at Kansas at 2:15 p.m. ET on NBC.
