AVONDALE, Ariz. – Jimmie Johnson, driving the No. 48 Lowe’s Patriotic Chevrolet SS, earned his 34th-career Cup pole and will lead the field to green at Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday afternoon.
“I’m very happy to see the progress and the direction things are going," Johnson said. "But a big shout out to Lowe’s and Hendrick Motorsports and Chevrolet; and I certainly want to send my thoughts and prayers across the pond to everybody in France.”
Joining Johnson in the final round of Friday's qualifying session were teammates Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
Earnhardt will roll his No. 88 Nationwide Chevrolet SS off the grid in third while Kahne and the No. 5 Farmers Insurance Chevrolet SS will start Sunday's 500 miler in ninth.
Gordon, driving the No. 24 Pepsi Chevrolet SS, will start 11th.
