CONCORD, N.C. -- Sunday brings Jeff Gordon's final race behind the wheel of the No. 24 Chevrolet SS, and Sports Illustrated is marking the occasion.

Gordon is the cover athlete for the latest issue of the magazine. The national cover story is titled "The Last Ride of Jeff Gordon."

Sports Illustrated Editor Mark Bechtel tells the story after sitting down with Gordon, Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson, former crew chief Ray Evernham and even TV host Kelly Ripa.

In a preview for the story, Bechtel reveals Gordon's thoughts about the legacy he is leaving behind.

“I don’t feel like it’s for me to decide," Gordon told Bechtel. "I put everything I can into my driving and into the team and into life, and I’m proud of that. That’s my personal legacy, knowing how much I’ve put into it and how it’s paid off.”

The issue with Gordon on the cover hits newsstands today -- Wednesday, Nov. 18.
