HOMESTEAD, Fla.—Jeff Gordon will roll off the starting grid fifth for his final NASCAR race this Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
In his last qualifying session on Friday evening, Gordon earned a fifth-place starting position for the No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet SS.
“It wasn’t easy,” Gordon said. “The car was a bit little tight, but I was more aggressive and got through (turns) one and two good. We have a really strong race car with this Axalta Chevrolet.”
Teammates Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jimmie Johnson joined Gordon in the final round. Earnhardt’s No. 88 Nationwide Chevrolet SS will start ninth while Johnson’s No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet posted the 12th-fastest speed.
Kasey Kahne, piloting the No. 5 Great Clips Chevrolet SS, rounds out the Hendrick Motorsports brigade in 18th.
Denny Hamlin won the pole and will lead the field to the green flag in the final race of the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup season, which will begin Sunday at 3 p.m. ET on NBC.
