CONCORD, N.C. -- For the second consecutive week, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has taken to his podcast, "The Dale Jr. Download," to give fans an update on his progress as he recovers from concussion-like symptoms.
The driver said he has been working on the exercises -- both physical and mental -- that his doctors have provided. It's an everyday process that takes approximately two hours at a time.
"There are certain things you can race through, but one of the things that you cannot race through is concussion-like symptoms," Earnhardt said. "The balance deal is a critical part of being able to drive a race car."
In his previous appearance on the podcast, he explained that the symptoms he had been experiencing were related to balance and nausea, and that he was working with his doctors to understand more about his injury and how to treat it.
Last Friday, Earnhardt tweeted that he "sensed improvement," but he reiterated on Monday's podcast that patience will be key.
"This process is going to take a little bit longer -- I think that's what I was trying to convey when I was telling you guys how I was going to take this slow and listen to the advice of my doctors," he explained. "I'm not going to go against that advice no matter what."
He promised another health update following Sunday's race at Pocono Raceway -- when Jeff Gordon will once again serve as the substitute driver in the No. 88 Chevrolet SS -- and noted that he will visit with his doctors in the near future.
"I'm going for another evaluation here soon to see what kind of gains we've made, get in front of my doctors and let them get a good look at me and let them tell me where they think I'm at," he said. "And that'll help us make the decision on what we're going to do for Watkins Glen."
In the meantime, Earnhardt asked that fans continue to send the No. 88 team "good vibes."
"Because when we get back together," he said, "it's gonna be on."
