HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Chase Elliott will lead his teammates to the green flag Sunday in the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

The Rookie of the Year contender jumped to the top of the leader board in both the first and second rounds of Friday evening's qualifying session.

In the final round, Elliott laid down a one-lap time of 30.492-seconds and earned a fifth-place starting position.

In search of his seventh NASCAR Sprint Cup championship this weekend, Jimmie Johnson was forced to put an extra lap on his tires when an untimely caution came out during his second lap on track during the first round.

Johnson did advance to the second round of qualifying but missed the final cut by two positions. He will roll off the grid in 14th.

"Unfortunately I just was off on that first run and we got behind," Johnson said of his early run. "I'm so much better at racing, let's line them up and race."

Alex Bowman also made it through to the second round of qualifying and will start in 19th.

Kasey Kahne did not advance past the first round and will take Sunday's green flag in 29th.

Kevin Harvick earned the pole.

The season finale will air on NBC Sunday, Nov. 20 at 2:30 p.m. ET.
