CONCORD, N.C. -- Last year, the surprise of the NASCAR awards banquet occurred right before Jeff Gordon took to the podium to deliver an emotional speech.
Gordon was just as surprised as the rest of the crowd when actor Tom Cruise stepped onstage to introduce the driver.
This year, it was teammate Jimmie Johnson's turn to be surprised when 23-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps stepped up to introduce the seven-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion.
