CONCORD, N.C. -- As Champion's Week in Las Vegas wound down, Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick was asked how Jimmie Johnson's record-tying seventh NASCAR Cup Series championship compared to his other titles.
"I never thought I'd get one of these," Hendrick said of his record 12 car owner championships in the Cup Series. "But this one, to see Jimmie tie (Dale) Earnhardt and (Richard) Petty was really special."
Hendrick said that watching fans celebrate in the stands as Johnson drove the No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet SS to the checkered flag helped him appreciate just how monumental the moment truly was.
"To see history being made, and now to watch him go for number eight, it's going to be exciting," Hendrick said.
