Throughout sports, there are certain numbers that are indelibly tied to an individual athlete.
Who comes to mind when you think of the No. 23?
Does a certain New York Yankees shortstop stand out when it comes to the No. 2?
USA Today Sports had some fun with numbers and selected the greatest athletes, across all sports, who wore each number from 00 to 99.
Among the elite group of athletes were a few of our own Hendrick Motorsports drivers.
Jimmie Johnson was the pick for the No. 48. Johnson has driven the No. 48 Chevrolet since his Hendrick Motorsports career began, and 81 wins and a record-tying seven NASCAR Cup Series championships later, it's hard to think of those digits without tying them to the driver. He beat out fellow No. 48-donning athletes including former MLB star Torii Hunter.
Another familiar name that made the cut was Darrell Waltrip, the publication's selection for the No. 17. Waltrip drove for Hendrick Motorsports from 1987 to 1990, at which point he was already a three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion. While at Hendrick Motorsports, the NASCAR Hall of Famer won nine races -- including his first Daytona 500 victory in 1989. He topped a list of athletes wearing No. 17 that included Basketball Hall of Famer John Havlicek.
Four-time Cup champion Jeff Gordon was among the finalists for the No. 24, though the athlete USA Today felt won that number was Baseball Hall of Famer Willie Mays. Mays took the crown ahead of names like Gordon, Kobe Bryant and Ken Griffey Jr.
