SPEEDWAY, Ind. – Another stage of racing is complete at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and as he did in Stage 1, Jimmie Johnson led his Hendrick Motorsports teammates in 17th.
Johnson was running inside the top 10 before a trip to pit road during a caution ultimately dropped him outside of the top 15.
After reports of a tight car, Kasey Kahne and the No. 5 Farmers Insurance Chevrolet SS team worked through multiple adjustments to finish the stage in 19th.
During a restart at Lap 75, a caution flag waved due to a "chain reaction" of contact during a restart that involved Dale Earnhardt Jr. The damage forced Earnhardt to the garage, ending his day prematurely. He was scored 35th.
"The car was fast," Earnhardt said. "We had a top-10 car for sure. Hopefully our luck will turn around. This has been tough for sure."
Due to engine issues, Chase Elliott’s day ended earlier in the race in Stage 1. He was scored 39th.
Kyle Busch won the stage.
With the first two stages complete, a final 60-lap segment remains before the checkered flag waves at Indianapolis.
