TALLADEGA, Ala. -- After a Stage 1 at Talladega Superspeedway that featured multiple cautions, two Hendrick Motorsports teammates emerged inside the top 10.

Jimmie Johnson led the way for the organization, taking the green-checkered flag in fifth after the first 55 laps Sunday afternoon.

The result earned him six extra points.

Kasey Kahne joined him inside the top 10 in 10th, picking up an extra point in the process.

Both Chase Elliott and Dale Earnhardt Jr. were penalized for making a pit stop while pit road was closed -- the two drivers were part of a pack that headed to pit road just as a caution flag waved, closing pit road. The penalty sent them to the rear of the field, but both were able to recover to jump back inside the top 15 late in the stage.

Earnhardt, however, was penalized for speeding on pit road during a stop under caution with four laps to go, sending him back to the rear of the field.

Ultimately, Elliott finished Stage 1 in 14th and Earnhardt took the green-checkered flag in 27th.

Stage 2 consists of another 55 laps followed by a final 78-lap segment to finish the race.
