CONCORD, N.C. – The NASCAR Cup Series enters the Round of 8 of the playoffs this weekend at Martinsville Speedway.
As teams make their way to Virginia for an exciting 500 laps of short-track racing, it’s a reminder of Hendrick Motorsports' history of success at the venue.
Take a look at the organization's records and stats at the 0.526-mile, paperclip-shaped track.
1) On April 29, 1984, Geoff Bodine captured Hendrick Motorsports’ very first NASCAR Cup Series win at Martinsville. After starting sixth and leading only 55 laps, Bodine secured the trip to Victory Lane. The driver finished ninth in the standings with three wins, seven top-fives and 14 top-10 finishes that season.
2) When it comes to finding Victory Lane, there's no track where Hendrick Motorsports has done that more often than Martinsville Speedway. The organization has earned 24 of the iconic grandfather clock trophies -- its most wins at any track, five wins ahead of Charlotte and Dover, tied for second. Hendrick Motorsports has found Victory Lane at Martinsville at least once in each of the past five years, and Sunday is a chance to extend that streak.
3) The 24 wins at the track were earned by five different drivers on the team. Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon have nine wins apiece, Darrell Waltrip captured the checkered flag four times and both Bodine and Dale Earnhardt Jr. have each visited Victory Lane once. Johnson earned the organization's most recent win at the track in October 2016.
4) The organization's drivers have scored 78 top-five finishes and 122 top-10s and led 9,094 laps at Martinsville since 1984 -- all three of which are Hendrick Motorsports records at any track.
5) Hendrick Motorsports has earned a total of 17 poles at Martinsville Speedway. Jeff Gordon has captured the most pole awards for the team at the track with a total of seven. The organization’s 17 poles are tied with Charlotte, Daytona and Richmond for the most at any track.
