CONCORD, N.C. -- NBC’s Nate Ryan was recently on the Hendrick Motorsports campus to catch up with No. 24 team crew chief Darian Grubb.
On the NASCAR on NBC podcast, Grubb discusses how things are going with rookie William Byron, how the technology craze has him learning something new every day, memories from his previous crew chief experiences and how he’s finding time to spend quality time with his kids even as a NASCAR Cup Series crew chief.
Grubb had high praise for Byron; he said his passion for racing and his competitive nature make him stand out.
“He’s definitely that style of driver where I think you’d go out and put him in a lawnmower race if you could because you know he’d be competitive,” Grubb said with a chuckle. “It’s interesting to see that fire and that spark in him to go the racetrack.”
Even back in the busy role of a crew chief after some time in different positions, Grubb said it’s been fun finding plenty of opportunities to spend time with his two children, Gavin and Gabriella.
“Take them to school, drop them off, pick them up,” he said. “Just the normal dad things and spend time with them and still bring them to the racetrack quite a bit if I can the way the school schedule and things work out.
