CONCORD, N.C. -- With his move to the No. 9 car for the 2018 season, Chase Elliott is carrying on a piece of family history in the number that his father, Bill Elliott, made famous.

The father and son duo sat down for a FOX Sports feature and discussed the significance of the switch in numbers.

"I had no clue they were even discussing it," Bill Elliott said. "For (Hendrick Motorsports owner) Rick (Hendrick) to go away from the No. 5 anyway because that was his first win in Cup for that number, I wouldn't know which number he would give up anyway, but looking back on it, I didn't think it'd ever happen."

The younger Elliott agreed, joking that he dropped subtle hints to Hendrick about it, but never thought it would come to fruition.

"I've had fun with it and I still try to have fun with it now," Chase Elliott said. "I think that's something you can't lose sight of so I'm looking forward to having some more fun as time goes."
