DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Thursday at Daytona International Speedway, Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman competed in the second Duel of the evening.

Elliott led his teammate to the checkered flag, finishing eighth. Bowman finished the race 13th.

With the finish, Bowman secured his front-row starting position for Sunday’s Daytona 500 on the outside pole alongside teammate William Byron.

Joey Logano won the race.

Below is a closer look at how the second and final Duel of the evening played out at Daytona International Speedway.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Elliott started the second Duel of Thursday evening on the front row alongside his teammate Bowman. He maintained his runner-up position behind Bowman for the first 12 laps of the race before heading to pit road for a green-flag stop.
  • On Lap 15, Elliott found himself in the inside lane without help in the draft, which caused him to fall back in the pack outside of the top 10.
  • By Lap 25, he had moved back up to ninth as the field settled into single-file racing.
  • In the final 10 laps, Elliott began to pick off cars one-by-one, making passes on the bottom before sliding back up to the outside lane. With five laps to go, he had moved up to sixth, but two laps later he fell back a few positions when he was caught on the bottom while attempting to move into fifth.
  • He ultimately took the checkered flag in eighth, picking up three points for the finish.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After qualifying on the front row for the Daytona 500, Bowman began Thursday evening’s second Duel on the pole. He held on to lead the first 12 laps of the race before heading to pit road for a green-flag stop.
  • After returning to the track, Bowman was caught in the inside lane without help and fell back in the pack to outside of the top 15.
  • By Lap 25, Bowman had settled into 13th, where he ran for much of the remainder of the race.
  • Bowman took the checkered flag in 13th, securing his outside pole for Sunday’s Daytona 500.
