AVONDALE, Ariz. -- Chase Elliott will lead all drivers to the green flag at Phoenix Raceway Sunday after he earned the pole position in Saturday's qualifying session.
It's the first pole position this season for the driver of the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE and his best Cup Series start at the track.
"The line through Turns 1 and 2 was a lot different," Elliott said. "Kevin (Harvick) kind of made the top work and then I think after that, everyone saw that and moved up. So, it’s great to get a pole. We’re in a little bit different colors this week with Unifirst on our Camaro. So, I’m excited to grab them a pole. It’s always a good thing when you can put down a fast lap. I just hope tomorrow goes good. That’s always the challenge. We’ll see, and I’m looking forward to it."
The pole marks Elliott's fifth season in a row where he has led the field and his ninth career pole position in 153 starts.
Hendrick Motorsports leads all teams with 12 poles at the 1-mile Phoenix race track, which accounts for eight different drivers. The organization has now won a pole in all 37 seasons competing in the Cup series, the most all time.
Teammate Alex Bowman, who still is riding high after his win in California last week, will roll off the grid in eighth at his hometown track.
William Byron will start in 17th, while Jimmie Johnson will start in 21st place.
