CONCORD, N.C. -- On this day 24 years ago, Jeff Gordon crossed the finish line first at Darlington Speedway, where he earned Hendrick Motorsports its 50th Cup Series win.
March 24, 1996 marked Gordon's second victory of the season when he won the spring race at the South Carolina track.
Gordon started on the outside pole and led for 189 laps out of 293 and earned 185 Cup Series points in the process.
He held off runner up Bobby Labonte by 1.4 seconds for the victory. Labonte's brother and Gordon's Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Terry Labonte, finished fifth in the race.
Gordon, who was 24 at the time, went on to win Hendrick Motorsports' 51st the following week at Bristol Motor Speedway, as well. The 1996 season saw Gordon take home trophies for 10 races overall and finish second in the Series standings behind teammate Terry Labonte.
In total, Gordon has 93 Cup Series wins under his belt, which puts him third on the all-time wins list.
Hendrick Motorsports has since gone on to win 257 Cup Series races overall and has a total of 12 championships. Four of those championships belong to Gordon.
