CONCORD, N.C. -- Chase Elliott placed ninth at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday, earning his second career top-10 finish at the track.
The driver of the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE rallied after he was tabbed with a speeding penalty in the first stage. The ninth-place finish marks Elliott's 10th top-10 result this season.
William Byron and Jimmie Johnson both followed Elliott with 11th- and 12th-place finishes, respectively. Alex Bowman ended the race in 15th.
Brad Keselowski won the event.
Below is a closer look at how the race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway unfolded for the four Hendrick Motorsports teammates.
CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 1LE
FINISHED: 9th
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Chase Elliott led all Hendrick Motorsports drivers with a third-place start. He fell to sixth within the first two laps but moved up to fifth when the first caution occurred on the 16th lap.
- When the field went green, Elliott was in fourth. He was surpassed by teammate Jimmie Johnson within the first turn of the 22nd lap and fell to fifth.
- Elliott went to pit road for the competition caution and restarted in 21st. He was up to 16th by the 41st lap and pushed to 14th by lap 43.
- Elliott was hit with a speeding penalty on pit road and had to head to the back of the pack. He restarted in 30th and was in 21st when he crossed the finish line at the end of the first stage.
- The start of Stage 2 saw Elliott in 14th place and he was up to 13th 10 laps in. He was in 11th by lap 100 and was in ninth 15 laps later. Elliott flirted being in and out of the top 10 and was riding in 10th on lap 160.
- A caution with less than 15 left in Stage 2 allowed him to stay in that position. He placed ninth at the end of the stage.
- Elliott started ninth for the beginning of Stage 3. He broke into the top five several laps later but was down to seventh by lap 203. He decided to stay on the track and moved into first place when the green flag waived again.
- Another caution a couple of laps later prompted Elliott to head to pit road. He returned to the track in 22nd and surged to 15th by lap 221. Two laps later, he was in 13th.
- Elliott was back in 10th by lap 243. Fifteen laps later, he was down to 11th. With less than nine laps to go, Elliott was in 10th.
- Elliott was in ninth with two laps to go after teammate Jimmie Johnson was tapped and fell back. Elliott held on to ninth for the remaining two laps.
WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 LIBERTY UNIVERSITY CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 1LE
FINISHED: 11th
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- William Byron rolled off the grid in 16th and made his way to 14th by the fourth lap. After the first caution, Byron restarted in ninth place. However, he was shuffled back after he got side drafted and was in 18th when the competition caution occurred.
- He was still in 18th when the field restarted and edged up to 14th within seven laps. By lap 57, Byron was riding in ninth. When the third yellow flag of the race came out, Byron remained on the track and restarted in second.
- Byron slid to fourth place with five to go in the first stage. He finished in eighth for Stage 1, earning three stage points.
- He pitted between stages and came out in 25th. Thirteen laps into Stage 2, Byron was up to 20th. A caution occurred less than 10 laps later, which allowed Byron to move into 16th place.
- Byron worked his way to 10th 40 laps into Stage 2. He shifted into eighth 20 laps later and was leading all Hendrick Motorsports drivers. He broke into the top five with 28 laps left in the stage.
- Byron opted to stay out when another caution occurred, which allowed him to move into fourth. Another caution happened with six left in Stage 2. Byron restarted in fifth place, which is how he ended the second stage.
- Byron remained in fifth for the start of the final stage. He shifted into third within the first 10 and cleared another car to move into second place. He fell back to third on lap 202, then pitted when another caution occurred.
- Byron restarted in eighth and another caution and restart moved him up to sixth. He fell back to seventh and soon was in 10th with less than 45 laps left in the race. Byron weaved in and out of the top 10 and eventually placed 11th.
JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 ALLY CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 1LE
FINISHED: 12th
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Jimmie Johnson started the race in 20th and worked his way to 15th within the first five laps. He pushed up to 12th when a caution occurred in the 16th lap. He jumped to fifth after the restart and quickly passed Chase Elliott for fourth place.
- Johnson scooted up to third one lap later but opted to pit during the competition caution. By lap 38, he was in 14th place and five laps later, he was in ninth. By the 50th lap, Johnson was in eighth.
- Johnson moved up further to sixth by the 58th lap. However, he was spun out several circuits later and brought out the third caution. He returned to the track in 34th and finished Stage 1 in 33rd.
- He kicked off Stage 2 in 22nd place but slipped to 24th by lap 87. Another caution occurred and Johnson restarted in 26th place. He was up to 19th with 50 laps left in the stage. Yet another caution was out with 13 laps to go, which allowed Johnson to stay out on the track and move into 13th.
- A yellow flag dropped again with six to go in the stage dropped Johnson to 16th on the restart, which is how he finished Stage 2.
- The No. 48 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE driver was in ninth several laps into Stage 3 and moved up to seventh when a caution occurred on lap 205. Johnson was in 11th after another restart on lap 208.
- A yellow flag and restart allowed him to move to seventh and Johnson was in fifth by lap 220. He in sixth 40 laps later and slipped another spot to seventh after he rode a little too high on a turn embankment.
- Johnson was down to eighth with 26 laps to go and was in ninth with 10 to go. He was tapped a little and fell to 10th, then slipped another couple of positions to 12th, which is how Johnson finished.
ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 88 CHEVYGOODS.COM/ADAM'S POLISHES CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 1LE
FINISHED: 15th
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Bowman started in eighth and quickly moved up to seventh by the third lap. However, he tumbled to 11th by the 12th lap in the race.
- He was in 20th after he headed to pit road during the first yellow flag of the race. Bowman was in 13th at the restart but started to slip.
- By the 39th lap he was down to 19th and he fell further to 24th by lap 47. He headed to pit road during the third caution and came back out in 27th. He moved up to 23rd to end the first stage.
- Bowman was riding in 16th for the start of the second stage. He scooted to 15th by lap 84 but decided to head to pit road after another caution came out. When the field went green on lap 100, he was in 23rd.
- He was up to 20th 10 laps later and moved to 17th by lap 139. Twenty laps later, he was up to 16th. A caution came out with 13 to go in the stage, which gave Bowman the chance to stay on the track instead of pitting. He was in 12th when another caution occurred a couple of laps later.
- At the restart, Bowman was in 10th. He quickly moved into ninth but lost his spot to Chase Elliott. Bowman placed 11th at the end of the stage.
- He was riding in 12th at the beginning of the final segment. Bowman decided to pit when a caution occurred and came back on the track in 18th.
- The driver of the No. 88 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE moved to 16th by lap 210 and another caution and restart pushed him into 10th place.
- By lap 221, Bowman was riding in 14th. However, he fell to 19th by lap 259. Bowman edged up to 15th in the final laps and finished the race there.
