CONCORD, N.C. -- It was a solid race for Chase Elliott Sunday as he finished in ninth and locked in another top-10 finish in the doubleheader weekend at Michigan International Speedway.
Following closely behind, Jimmie Johnson and William Byron finished the race in 11th and 12th, respectively. Alex Bowman closed out the Hendrick Motorsports drivers, finishing in 36th.
Kevin Harvick won the race.
Listed below is a closer look at how the race played out at Michigan International Speedway for the four Hendrick Motorsports drivers.
CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 MOUNTAIN DEW CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 1LE
FINISHED: 9th
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Elliott started the race in 14th, predetermined by his placement in the race from Saturday.
- Quickly moving up, Elliott raced to 13th by lap 15. Elliott held steady and finish the first stage there.
- He started the second stage in 15th. Elliott made quick work of the drivers ahead of him and raced his way up to 11th by lap 48. He continued the run and breached the top 10 on lap 58, racing in 10th. He finished Stage 2 in 11th.
- Elliott reset for Stage 3 in fifth and jumped into fourth after the green flag restart. By lap 103, Elliott ran in third. A caution fell on lap 104 and Elliott reshuffled into eighth.
- Elliott continued to fight to stay in the top 10, running in 10th on lap 113. Chipping away at the field, Elliott pushed his way up to sixth. With a caution on lap 137, Elliott reset in sixth.
- With 10 to go, Elliott was in seventh. He passed the checkered flag and finished in ninth.
WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 AXALTA CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 1LE
FINISHED: 12th
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Bryon shuffled up to the front row after several cars in front of him had to start in the rear. By the fourth lap, Byron had fallen into fourth place. He continued to race hard and finish the first stage in sixth.
- With the choose rule in play, Byron utilized the option and jumped second to start Stage 2.
- By lap 50, Byron had fallen to fifth. He continued to fall back, running in 12th on lap 55. He finished the second stage in 17th.
- Reshuffling for the final stage, Byron started in 14th. He fell back to 17th by lap 94. A caution on lap 95 gave Byron a chance to pit and make some necessary adjustments.
- Restarting after caution in 22nd, Byron moved up into 12th by lap 132. Another caution came out on lap 137 and Byron pushed his way into 10th.
- With 10 laps to go, Byron was in 12th and finished the race there.
JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 ALLY CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 1LE
FINISHED: 11th
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Johnson shuffled into the second row behind Byron due to other cars being pushed to the back upon the start of the race.
- Making a big move, Johnson snaked his way into second. By lap 15, he had fallen back to seventh. Johnson was in 11th by lap 24 and teamed up with teammate Chase Elliott, who was in 12th, to regain track positions. However, he was unable to move up and finished Stage 1 in 11th.
- Johnson reset for Stage 2 in fourth but quickly fell back to eighth after the green flag was dropped. Johnson continued to fall, running 13th by lap 55. He went on to finish Stage 2 in 14th.
- Johnson started Stage 3 in 18th and fell to 20th. A caution on lap 95 led to a big jump for Johnson, where he restarted the race in eighth. Another caution on lap 104 pushed Johnson back to 15th.
- By lap 111, Johnson had made a big jump back to 12th and he continued to build on the momentum, moving up to ninth by lap 132.
- With the final caution falling on lap 137, Johnson reset in ninth and looked to capture a top 10 placement. He finished the race just outside of the top 10 in 11th.
ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 88 CHEVYGOODS.COM/ADAM'S POLISHES CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 1LE
FINISHED: 36th
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Bowman started the second day of the doubleheader weekend in 21st. He spent the majority of the first stage in 23rd. He eventually pushed his way up to 15th, where he finished the first stage.
- Bowman lined up for the second stage in 16th and drove up to 14th by lap 49 he ran the second stage hard and finished in 15th.
- The driver of the No. 88 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE started the final stage in 10th. A caution on lap 97 pushed him back and he restarted the race in 27th.
- Bowman made a huge leap and maneuvered through the field into 14th by lap 104.
- After another restart, Bowman fell back to 25th by lap 111. With another big push, he ran his way up to 19th by lap 132.
- On lap 137, Bowman had a flat tire that drew out a caution. He pitted and restarted in 29th, finishing the race in 36th.
