CONCORD, N.C. -- On Thursday, the ride for Alex Bowman’s No. 48 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE was revealed with a special paint scheme that will honor a fallen soldier during the Charlotte 600 on May 30.
The Ally Patriotic machine will take on the look of a military vehicle with its sleek black matte base. The iconic Ally echo logo on the hood will be accented with a deep blue and red to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice serving the United States.
Bowman will have Captain Matt Brewer’s name along for the ride at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Brewer served in the Marines after graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 2013, where he played football for the Midshipmen and was a heavyweight boxer.
"To have Capt. Brewer’s name on the car, it’s an honor," Bowman said. "I got to speak with his family a little bit, and hopefully we can get a win for him. We’ve been close in the 600 before and it just makes it mean a little bit more. We’re just trying to show our appreciation the best we can.”
Brewer went on to serve as a Rifle Platoon Commander and Combined Anti-Armor Team Platoon Commander and completed deployments to Japan and Korea. Shortly after his deployments, he completed the Marine Special Forces Assessment Course and served as a Special Operations Expert and Operations Officer with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Mali.
When Brewer’s military career ended, he received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Defense Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the United Nations Medal and the Army Achievement Medal for his dedication to the U.S. military.
Brewer passed away on Feb. 19, 2021 after battling symptoms of the degenerative brain disorder Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Bowman hopes carrying his name on his Chevrolet can serve a small tribute to Brewer and his family.
“It’s always really special to go to Charlotte for the 600 for Memorial Day weekend every year," Bowman said. "There’s a lot of special things going on. Every year, having someone’s name on the car is really special and makes you want to win for them a little more."
