CONCORD, N.C. -- Kyle Larson will have LCpl Edward Dycus’ name on board the No. 5 MetroTech Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE when he hits the track Sunday evening at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the 600 Miles of Remembrance.
Dycus was from Greenville, Mississippi, and long aspired to enlist with the Marines growing up. He graduated from Riverside High School in 2008 and went to bootcamp in Parris Island, South Carolina, in 2010. He graduated in 2011 and was deployed to Afghanistan a few months later. He was there for six short weeks before he was killed in action on Feb. 21, 2012.
As a tribute to Dycus and other fallen soldiers, Larson and the rest of his Hendrick Motorsports teammates will have their names replaced with a fallen military member’s moniker on their windshields for the race at Charlotte. Each year, the Memorial Day weekend race at Charlotte promotes the NASCAR Salutes initiative to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to serve in the United States Military.
Dycus was nominated to have his name on board the No. 5 Chevrolet through Jesse Maxcy of Henrick Automotive Group’s marketing team. The pair served together in the Marines at School of Infantry at Camp Giger and were both deployed to Afghanistan at the same time.
Earlier this week, Larson’s MetroTech ride was revealed as a one-race sponsor for the 600-mile race. Click here to see the Camaro from all angles.
Larson and the rest of his Hendrick Motorsports teammates will roll off the grid for the Charlotte 600 on Sunday at 6 p.m. ET. The race will be broadcast on FOX.
