CONCORD, N.C. – Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott both will start on the front row at Martinsville Speedway this Sunday with Larson beginning from the pole position and Elliott lining up second for the penultimate NASCAR Cup Series race of the season.
Larson and Elliott earned their respective starting positions after their 1-2 finish at Kansas Speedway last Sunday, marking the organization’s seventh 1-2 result this season. Teammate William Byron will start his day at Martinsville in 11th while Alex Bowman will roll off the grid 13th at the .526-mile track.
The starting lineup was set based on the metrics formula from last season. It applies the data from the driver's finishing position of the last race (25%), the car owner's finishing position from the last race (25%), team owner points ranking (35%) and the fastest lap from the previous race.
For the playoffs, the metrics for the eight drivers in the hunt for the 2021 Cup Series championship will be calculated for the first eight spots in the field followed by the remaining Cup drivers.
